![]() ![]() ''The plane leaves tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock and if you want to meet me at the airport and not come out for the second half, you're more than welcome to. 'I told them at halftime, 'Fellas, we're collecting your jerseys in 30 minutes and all the memories you've shared are going to be over,'' Amplo said. The Golden Eagles ended the Pioneers' 22-game home winning streak in stunning fashion, storming back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to win, 10-9. Last weekend, Marquette, in only its fourth season of intercollegiate play, knocked off Denver, the nation's top-ranked team and defending NCAA champion, to win the Big East tournament. He built a program around them, built a family around them, nurtured them, challenged them, loved them every step of the way.Īnd something special happened, something that would have been almost unimaginable when those kids were getting to know each other in the spring of 2012 - strangers in a strange land, led by a coach who believed in his ragtag collection of undersized, underappreciated, under-the-radar players and got them to believe in themselves. So he looked for players with chips on their shoulders, kids from blue-collar backgrounds who'd been told they weren't good enough but would outwork more talented players. Amplo would have better luck selling sand in the desert. The top high school players on the East Coast weren't going to consider a start-from-scratch program in the Midwest - and especially one that wouldn't even play games in its first season. 'They had to have a pulse,' he said, 'and know how to hold a lacrosse stick.' I definitely didn’t give him a ride back.Joe Amplo didn't have the luxury of being choosy when he started recruiting players for Marquette University's brand-new men's lacrosse program in 2011. I showed my friend, who dealt with this guy himself, and I never saw him again. I didn’t even offer this ride, my friend asked me to help out and I said okay cause it wasn’t a big deal and I never asked for gas money because it never occurred to me as I had to go through there anyways. He proceeded to tell me that he is very broke and I could have confirmed that with him prior to the ride. Please note this man is a few years older than me and graduated college long before I did and had been working longer than me. He also didn’t appreciate me smoking, in my own vehicle, even though he said nothing at the time. I get a text from person A about how ‘embarrassed’ he is as he thought I was giving out free rides so I should have made it clear I wanted gas money well before. I drop them both off where they are staying and go to my friend’s house where I will be sleeping. Neither of them say anything, so I light up but I get glared at, so to keep the peace I don’t do it again. Then, I ask if they are okay if I have a smoke on the way. I turn on some music as we get going but person A doesn’t like it so requests we turn it off or we can all take turns playing music for the 2 hour drive and I agree because honestly, who cares? It’s not for that long. We are ready to get going and person B hands me some cash for gas money. I get to the meeting spot and he’s there with person B. Longer ride, but can leave the day and time he wants to. Mind you, there is a bus that can go between cities. I informed him that’s fine, but I will still be leaving his city on time so take that into consideration. He then told me he needed some time to ‘process this’ and that he would call me back. And I have to be there a day early to figure out all I needed to do to make the show run smoothly. So I get a call from person A telling me they were so confused and thought we were driving down tomorrow. I want to preface this by saying I smoked at the time (I know, ugh) and I did smoke in my own vehicle. I texted the two people that I was on the way and I wound be there at ‘x’ time and to meet me where we arranged. My friend asked if I could pick up a couple people on my way through another city. ![]() I lived a few hours away from the city and I had to drive myself. It was a lightly paid gig and I liked this friend and the group that was working on it, so I said hey why not. ![]() I was hired to go back to a city I used to live in to help work on a show for a friend. This happened many years ago but it still makes me laugh so very hard. ![]()
